After completing his Bachelor's and Master's degree in Computer Engineering, Michael H. Spiegel moved to the Institute of Mechanics and Mechatronics, where he wrote his dissertation in cooperation with the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology. His research focussed on the efficient and reliable operation of power grids with a high proportion of volatile renewable energies.

Using special electricity grids, so-called multi-microgrids, which can disconnect from the higher-level grid if necessary, Michael H. Spiegel developed new algorithms to be able to take into account even complex grid models for securing and optimising operational management. He also worked on validating the algorithms and was thus able to demonstrate the benefits of these methods for a variety of operating situations. "It turns out that even on a specially designed test system with a high proportion of fluctuating energy sources, a significant increase in reliability compared to conventional systems is possible," says Michael H. Spiegel, summarising the results of his work.
