Please visit our website for all information about the admission procedures.
You can find information on the language of instruction on the webpage of studies or in the curriculum.
Changing your degree programme may have consequences regarding the receipt of child benefits or study grants (e.g. in Austria: "Familienbeihilfe" and "Studienbeihilfe"). Therefore, please consult with the Study Grant Department or the finance authority prior to a change!

Examinations/courses, positively assessed and completed as part of a regular degree programme at TU Wien, are recognised for all other regular degree programmes in the case of admission, provided they:
- are listed in the curriculum of the programme and are assigned to the respective curricula in TISS with title, type, and ECTS credits,
- are intended to be used as "Free Electives and Transferable Skills" or
- are intended to be used for the curricular part of the doctoral programme.
If not all of these mentioned requirements are met, and the examinations/courses do not fall under the scope of transitional provisions, the student must submit an application for recognition.
Please note that in TISS, these examinations/courses will always be shown under the degree programme’s number under which they were completed.
For further questions about the curriculum, please contact the respective dean's office.
Various reasons may require you to interrupt your studies. There are three options available:
- Academic Leave
- De-registration from your studies
- Remaining enrolled despite the interruption in your studies
Which of these options is best depends entirely on your individual situation.
Failure to pay the prescribed amount within the continuation period will result in automatic de-registration from your studies.
You have the option of resuming your studies in the next semester or at a later date. To continue your studies, either visit the Admission Office in person with your TUCard during front office hours during the admission period or contact us via Jira, opens an external URL in a new window (please provide your name, student ID number, degree programme and a scan of your ID card).
Previously completed examinations will be retained.
Please note that in case of a change of curriculum in the meantime, you can only start in the new curriculum! The recognition of examinations will then be done on the basis of the equivalence list in the dean's office.
Failure to pay the prescribed amount within the continuation period will result in automatic de-registration from your studies.
However, you also have the option of reporting your de-registration to the Admission Office either in person or via Jira, opens an external URL in a new window, providing your name, student ID number, degree programme and a scan of your TUCard.
If you require a Leaving Certificate, please contact the Admission Office.
There are two reasons why you may be excluded from your studies:
Failure to achieve the minimum number of credits:
If you have not achieved the minimum academic performance (16 ECTS within the first 4 semesters of the bachelor programme), your admission will expire. Re-admission to the same programme is only possible after four semesters.
Negative assessment of the last examination attempt:
If the last possible examination attempt (StEOP examinations 4 attempts in total, other examinations 5, very last examination of the degree programme 6) is also negative, your admission will expire on the examination date. Re-admission to this programme at TU Wien will then no longer be possible. In addition, you will also be excluded from all programmes in whose curriculum these courses are required.
Payment of fees
The payment of the ÖH/tuition fee can take anywhere from a few minutes to seven working days. As soon as the amount has been received in full and on time, your status in your TISS account will change to "reported continued" and the confirmation of enrolment can then be issued.
TU Wien cannot expedite the payment process. You will need to be patient.
If your studies are not reported continued after one week, there has been an error in the transaction and the fee you paid cannot be allocated to your account at TU Wien by the bank. As a result, your studies are not registered (as continued). If the deposit cannot be allocated or if it has been made after the deadline, the amount will be automatically refunded to the account from which the transaction was made.
If you forgot to include the payment reference/customer details when making your payment, or if you entered them incorrectly, please wait one week. In many cases, the bank can manually allocate the transfer.
TU Wien is unable to make any subsequent corrections (incorrect payment reference/customer details)!
If your studies are still not reported continued after one week, a mispayment has been made and the bank cannot assign the amount you paid to your account at TU Wien. As a result, your studies are not registered (as continued).
If the transaction cannot be assigned or the payment is made after the deadline, the amount will be automatically refunded to the account from which the payment was made.
If the amount is not automatically reimbursed, please contact the Admission Office.
No.
Due to administrative reasons, it is not possible to use excess contributions from a previous semester for the current semester.
You can request reimbursement for the overpaid amount.
In order to be reported continued as a non-degree student to attend the Preparatory Programme ("Vorstudienlehrgang"), you have to pay the ÖH fee prescribed in TISS as well as the course fee prescribed by the VWU.
The payment to the VWU is not automatically acknowledged by TU Wien. It may therefore take a few working days before your enrolment is updated.
If your enrolment has not been updated after a week, there may have been an error with the payment. Please contact the Admission Office and the office of the VWU.
There is no such thing as an additional tolerance semester.
If you exceed the programme duration stipulated in the curriculum plus two tolerance semesters your will have to pay the tuition fee.
However, you may apply for a waiver if there is a valid reason to do so. Further information on this can be found on our webpage on tuition fee.

Due to the high number of submissions, processing time of an application for admission takes approximately 10 to 12 weeks. Please note that the Admission Office is not able to provide you with information about the current status of your application until the full processing time has expired.
There may be several reasons for this:
- Additional documents were submitted, resulting in a longer processing time
- As part of the processing of the application for admission to a master or doctoral programme, the documents are forwarded to the relevant Dean of Studies for evaluation of the academic background, which may extend the duration of the review. Unfortunately, the Admission Office has no influence over the duration of the assessment by the relevant Dean of Studies.
- All correspondence from the Admission Office will be sent by post to the address provided on the application form. The Admission Office accepts no responsibility for loss or damage during shipping. It is therefore possible that a notification has already been sent but has been lost on its way.
