As a doctoral candidate with an employment contract at TU Wien, you are undergoing intensive professional training, but you are also in a temporary employment relationship. The Human Resources Development department at TU Wien therefore supports you with opportunities for transferrable skills development. With programs, seminars, summer schools, and individual coaching, we prepare you as best as possible for your next career steps—within or outside TU Wien, in academia, or beyond.

What is WINA+?
In our one-year group coaching program, you will be part of an interdisciplinary group with other TUW predocs and receive support from our experienced coach Dr. Martina Friedl in developing your personal and interdisciplinary skills. Technical input, self-reflection, and peer group coaching will support you in setting and achieving your goals, provide you with clarity about your own values, and teach you skills that go beyond your technical training in your working group. Here you can acquire skills that will help you achieve your next career steps.
Support for an ideal starting point
WINA+ is TU Wien's one-year development program for young researchers in temporary substitute positions. The university invites all predoctoral research assistants (Predocs) at TU Wien to join the program.
Each year 2 program cycles start: a German class in winter term, an English class in summer term.
Customized Skill Development
WINA+ offers support in customised skill development during fixed-termed employment. The target agreement with your supervisor serves as a basis of this.

Networking
In addition to your personal development in your individual research area, the university-wide networking and interdisciplinary exchange is core to the program.
Four times within the two-year period, you meet with your colleagues for a group coaching session to share successful steps taken, challenges and achievements.

- Target Agreement: identifying and agreeing upon goals, planning your PhD project, guest: Fachschaft Doktorat (student council)
- Scientific Writing: observing and training your writing skills and language style, dealing with writer's block, guest: Dr.in Eva Müller (scientific writer)
- Time- and selfmanagement: getting more efficient with your time and energy
- Networking, interviewing & career decision-making (inside or outside Academia)

Participants are expected to attend at least 75% of all appointments. Switching single appointments of a cycle is possible upon request by email to the administrative person of the Human Resources Development (currently: Stefanie Madsen).

As a participant, you gain access to different forms of support and to all the seminars of the HR development program, opens an external URL in a new window, so that you are left in the best possible situation at the end of your fixed-term employment at TU Wien. On request, we also organise seminars on special topics for your group.
During the semester, there is often hardly enough time to deal with your own further education. The HR Development organises and manages the TU Austria, opens an external URL in a new window Summerschool Doc+, opens an external URL in a new window and international Summerschool cooperations.
Together with an international group of PhD students you can take part in various seminars and trainings - a perfect opportunity for social interaction and networking.

During your studies, there may be times when you feel particularly stressed or overwhelmed. In such moments, it's important to seek support!
The Student Support of TU Wien offers psychological counseling sessions for students. In these one-on-one sessions students can discuss study-related or personal challenges with a clinical psychologist and work together to find solutions.
Each student can book up to three 50-minute sessions per calendar year.

In addition, the Student Support offers workshops on study-related topics. You can find current workshops on the Student Support website.
The Ombudsman for studies and teaching is a service for TU students who have concerns about their everyday life at the university. You can get advice, support and help with communication. We contact the responsible persons and work together with them to find appropriate solutions.
You can contact them in conflict situations relating to your supervision, your teaching, or your own doctoral studies.

The Fachschaft Doktorat is the representation of interests of doctoral candidates at the TU Wien.
We are a group of volunteers, including five officially elected representatives, who represent your interests in university governing bodies and provide advice and assistance with questions related to your studies and research.
In addition, we organize workshops and social events to help you expand your skills and connect with other doctoral students.

For your individual career development, we invite you to exchange ideas with your supervisor via the annual structured appraisal interview. Seminars are held annually for this purpose. If required, you can arrange an individual counselling interview with us.
In our HR development program, opens an external URL in a new window, you will find special workshops and seminars in categories such as Focus Science, Focus on Teaching, Methods Competence, etc., in which you can acquire skills such as academic writing, presentation or communication techniques as well as tools such as project management or IT programs. Our in-house experts inform and advise you in topic-specific seminars about national and international research funding opportunities, citation methods or didactics in teaching. Application training and workshops on negotiation strategies round off your qualifications for a career after TU Wien.

The Austrian Higher Education Conference (HSK) has developed national recommendations on career paths in academia in a working group. These recommendations were published last summer and presented at a series of information events at Austrian universities in the fall and winter.
