Appraisal Interview
What is an appraisal interview?
An appraisal interview (MAG) is a confidential, annual meeting between an employee and their direct leader. As a direct leader, you must offer an appraisal interview to all employees in your organizational unit once per calendar year.
- It is a one-on-one conversation which you can conduct based on a questionnaire (PDF) or with the help of a structured framework (PDF) (detailed version). If you are already familiar with appraisal interview, the questionnaire is usually sufficient.
- This conversation reviews the employee’s work situation both retrospectively and with a forward-looking perspective. It includes reflection on collaboration within the team and with the leader, and results in jointly agreed goals for professional, personal, and career development.
The appraisal interview (MAG) aims to define clear goals, support the employee’s development, and align it with the organization’s overall objectives. As a direct leader, you must complete the appraisal summary form after concluding your appraisal interviews.
The employee appraisal lays the foundation for success and team spirit because…
... it helps to highlight important issues that are not addressed in everyday conversations.
… it promotes motivation and commitment.
… it strengthens trust and communication between employee and leader.
… it creates space for recognition and appreciation of past achievements.
… it makes an important contribution to the success of the organization.
