For admission with a bachelor's degree from another national or international post-secondary educational institution (university, university of applied sciences, etc.) an application, opens in new window with the Admission Office is necessary, as the equivalence to the relevant bachelor's programme offered at TU Wien has to be evaluated by the respective Dean of Academic Affairs. 

The prerequisite for admission to a master's programme is

  • the completion of a bachelor's programme in a relevant subject or another relevant degree programme at the same level of higher education at a recognised post-secondary educational institution and
  • the previous studies must comprise at least 180 ECTS.

If you have already finished your Bachelor’s degree and are only waiting for the diploma to be issued, a confirmation issued by the university that you have already obtained your degree is also accepted.

Step 1: Application for admission

Please submit the following documents via post or in person at the Admission Office:

  • duly signed application form
  • supply a valid email-address in the respective field of the application form
  • document of completion of Bachelor/diploma degree (officially legalised copy with official translation)
  • diploma supplement, transcript of records, index with ECTS and contact hours (officially legalised copy with official translation)
  • proof of Proficiency of German: Competence in German Level A2 and/or Level C1 (officially legalised copy) for master programmes taught in German
    • not necessary for English taught programmes
  • proof of Proficiency of English: Competence in English Level B2 (officially legalised copy) for master programmes taught in English
    • not necessary for German taught programmes
  • passport copy
  • for non-EU/EEA citizens with Austrian home addresses: confirmation of registration ("Meldebestätigung")

Additionally for selected master's programmes:

  • Master's Programme Biomedical Engineering: additional, indication of the desired focus within the master's programme Biomedical Engineering (defined in curriculum).
  • Master's Programmes Mechanical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering - Management: additional an official description of the attended courses (Syllabus) and an explanation of the grading system.

 

Applications sent in electronically will not be considered. 

Please note that because of repeated customs payment demands, mail sent via express shipment companies from a non-EU/EEA country may not be accepted by the admission office! Please also refrain from giving our e-mail address to the courier services as we have no use for shipment updates. 

NOTE!
Documents issued in countries other than Austria are subject to legalisation regulations. All documents whose originals were not issued in German or English shall be officially translated. Please have documents translated only after legalisation. The official translation must be inseparably attached to the original document!

For administrative reasons a maximum of 2 applications for admission per person are allowed!

Personal enrolment with a letter of admission is possible until October 31st (winter semester) or until March 31st (summer semester).

Therefore, please send the documents in good time!
Due to the high number of applications, processing may take 10-12 weeks. Please understand that the Admissions Office cannot provide any information (neither by phone nor by email) about the processing status of your application before this processing time has expired.

In order to obtain admission for the semester applied for we recommend submitting complete applications within the following periods:

  • winter semester:
    • EU/EEA citizens: begin of February until end of July
    • non-EU/EEA citizens: January 16th until July 15th
  • summer semester:
    • EU/EEA citizens: begin of August until end of January
    • non-EU/EEA citizens: July 16th until January 15th 

For incomplete applications or applications received by the Admissions Office after this time, admission for the desired semester cannot be guaranteed due to the above-mentioned processing time. In this case, admission is only possible for the following semester.

NOTE!

Step 2: Processing the Application

After receiving your application, the Admission Office is verifying the existence and authenticity of the documents. If there are any formal irregularities in the documents the Admission Office will inform you by post or e-mail.

If missing documents, translations etc. are not sent within the set deadlines, the application will be rejected and admission at TU Wien is not possible. Therefore, follow the instructions of the Admission Office carefully!

Once the documents are complete and have been reviewed by the Admission Office, the application will be forwarded to the relevant Dean of Academic Affairs for review of the academic background.

If the Dean of Academic Affairs requires further information or documents from you, they will contact you by e-mail.

If the completed studies largely corresponds to the relevant bachelor's programme at TU Wien, admission to the master's programme may be granted. If differences in subject matter are identified, admission will be granted with conditions (= additional courses from the bachelor's programme), which must be completed as supplementary examinations during the master's programme. 

If the identified differences in subject matter amount to more than 30 ECTS credits, admission is unfortunately not possible.

Prescribed supplementary examinations like German must be passed prior to admission as degree student and can be completed at the University Preparation Programme ("Vorstudienlehrgang der Wiener Universitäten - VWU"). Therefore, you will get enrolled as non-degree-student. You have to pay the course fee.

NOTE! 
Applicants, who have to pass the supplementary examination German, have to watch additionally the deadlines for course-registration to the University Preparation Programme! Once the Dean of Academic Affairs has completed the review and determined that your previous education is sufficiently comparable, the Admission Office will issue a letter of admission and send it to you by post. If your application is rejected, you will also be notified by post.

Read all received documents from TU Wien very carefully! They contain all necessary information! 

Step 3: Admission letter received, what now?

Should you be subject to visa requirements, you can apply for residence authorisation with the Austrian diplomatic authorities (embassy, consulate) in your country of origin, exhibiting your admission letter.

NOTE! 
The Admission Office cannot provide you with any information or help in visa requirements. It is not the responsibility of the Admission Office. If you have any questions please ask the Austrian diplomatic authority in your country or the Magistratsabteilung 35 in Vienna for help.

Online Application

The online application is independent of the application for admission, but must be completed at the latest before the personal enrolment at the university. At the end of the process, an appointment for the first-time admission must be booked (this only applies to the winter semester).

NOTE!
For the master's programmes Architecture, Building Science and Environment and Green Chemistry you register for the application or selection procedure during the course of completing the online registration. Therefore, please keep the individual deadlines in mind.

Personal Enrolment

After completion of the online application you have to come to the Admission Office in person.
Please ensure to bring the following documents with you:

  • your admission letter,
    • with an admission letter for the winter semester, you can enrol until October 31st
    • with an admission letter for the summer semester, you can enrol until March 31st
  • your admission code (from the online application),
  • for students of the preparatory programme: confirmation of registration and payment from the VWU,
  • your valid passport and
  • your valid residence permit (non-EU-citizens only!) if available.

If you have never been admitted to a degree programme at another Austrian university, you will receive an eight-digit student ID number and your student ID card (TUcard) when you enrol in person at the Admissions Office.

NOTE!
If supplementary examinations have been prescribed, you have to register for the University Preparation Programme latest by August 25th (winter semester) or January 23rd (summer semester). Otherwise, attendance of the University Preparation Programme is not possible.
