Physics Colloquium at TU Wien

The Physics Colloquium is the joint lecture series of the TU Wien Faculty of Physics.
Renowned scientists from Austria and abroad present current developments from across all areas of physics, in an accessible way that reaches beyond their own field.

The colloquium is open to students, researchers and anyone interested.
Dates and topics can be found in the overview below.

Lecture by Professor Nikolay I. Zheludev on “Photonic Time Crystals & the Dawn of Timetronics”

  • When: Wednesday 11 November 2026, 16:00
  • Where: Lecture Hall HS5, Freihaus, 2nd floor, green area
  • Abstract:
Digital mechanical computers dominated well into the twentieth century before being displaced by electronic machines.
The decisive advantage of electronics was their transition to the nanoscale.
Can nano-mechanical computers also be scaled to the nanoscale and compete with electronic architectures?
We discuss the development of opto-nano-mechanical time crystals and the emergence of timetronics, a data processing technology based on the concept of a time crystal, where active elements can be switched with femtojoule-scale energies, consuming only a few femtowatts of optical power.
