Obituary for Andrey Nikolaevich Ivanov

We mourn Andrey Nikolaevich Ivanov. Andrey was born on June 3, 1945 in what was then Leningrad. Since 1993 he was a university professor at the Faculty of Physics, named "Peter The Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University" after Peter the Great. Since 1995 he has been a guest professor at the Institute for Nuclear Physics for several years and has been closely associated with the institute ever since.

He was a researcher in theoretical physics through and through and preferred free research work at the Institute for Nuclear Physics, and later after the merger at the Atomic Institute, to a permanent position at St. Petersburg University and resigned from his position there in 1998.

According to inspirehep.net he has published 159 scientific articles in refereed journals. Most of these in Physical Review C and D, Physics Letter B and Nuclear Physics B. In recent years he has focused in particular on neutron physics and gravitation. However, his sphere of activity was very broad across the entire field of theoretical physics, and he did not shy away from scientific controversies with colleagues. Checking the so-called standard model of elementary particles at low energies was very important to him. Shortly before his death he extended the accuracy of the description of neutron beta decay in the Standard Model to an accuracy of 10^-5. These calculations make it possible to search for elementary particles in these processes that are significantly heavier than the masses that can be achieved in high-energy experiments at CERN.

Andrey and his wife Natalia got infected by the coronavirus. Natalia died a few days after the infection, Andrey died a few days later on December 18, 2021.

We will miss Andrey as a personal friend and with his immense wealth of ideas, his scientific skills and his creativity.
