ZUG stands for the factual and determined representation of the interests of all employees – regardless of hierarchy or political affiliation. We particularly represent the interests of the Mittelbau (academic and administrative mid-level staff). One of our core concerns is the dedicated support of employees in fixed-term and precarious positions.

Sustainably mobile: We have consistently advocated for climate-friendly mobility – from promoting the Klimaticket to our ongoing cycleFIT initiative, through which we are making TU Wien bicycle-friendly. Our goal is to create bicycle-friendly infrastructure that also benefits other activities – community, climate resilience, and health!

Our Focus Areas

  • Improvement of the employment situation and career prospects of ALL employees — from student assistants, pre-doctoral researchers, and project staff to postdocs, senior lecturers, senior scientists, senior artists, assistant professors, associate professors, and full professors. A particular focus of our efforts is on supporting employees in fixed-term and precarious employment situations.
  • Supporting employees during the doctoral phase by reducing teaching loads, ensuring good supervision conditions, and extending the standard duration of doctoral studies from 4 to 5 years so that completion becomes realistically achievable.
  • Equal opportunities regardless of gender, origin, family background, or financial situation.
  • Strengthening the position of student employees – protecting them from overload and structural exploitation, ensuring fair time management, clear responsibilities, greater visibility, and appreciation.
  • Expanding tailored professional development (e.g. didactics, academic writing, grant applications, digital skills).
  • Relieving employees who combine research, teaching, project work, and administrative duties, and supporting them in developing the necessary management, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Critically addressing structural conditions of academic work – such as funding logic, project dependency, and publication pressure – which increasingly affect staff.
  • Promoting a work culture that allows space for thought and creative reflection – as a prerequisite for sustainable, high-quality research beyond constant work intensification.
  • Improving career prospects and academic pathways at TU Wien by expanding post-dissertation opportunities – from Senior Scientist and Senior Lecturer positions up to tenure-track roles.
  • Strengthening the value of teaching and ensuring it is properly reflected in career paths. Abolition of weighting factors for all employees.
  • Developing sustainable career perspectives at TU Wien with clear and transparent rules, open communication, and a fair application of the fixed-term contract regulations.
  • Improving support for conference participation and research stays abroad.
  • Establishing mentoring programs.
