„SIMS Studies of Oxides: Studying Mass Transport at Various Length Scales“

Andere

The combination of 18O/16O exchange and Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) analysis constitutes a powerful tool for probing oxygen transport processes in oxides. In particular the technique has been applied to the measurement of the (spatially invariant) bulk diffusion coefficient (D*) of complex oxides. In my talk, after a brief introduction to the technique and its capabilities and limitations, I demonstrate the
application of this method to two unusual cases in which the diffusion coefficient varies at a function of position. Specifically, I present recent work on 18O transport (i) in dense ceramics of nanocrystalline yttria-stabilised zirconia (YSZ) and (ii) through the spacecharge layer at the surface of single crystal SrTiO3. These results highlight the ability of SIMS to differentiate between isotopes over a range of length scales.
