International Intership Programm

Online & On-Site Programm

Internship at the National Institute of Informatics | Tokyo, Japan

This program is a part of NII's international exchange activities with students from institutions with which NII has concluded an MOU agreement. It is aimed at giving interns the opportunity to engage in research activities as well as receiving guidance in their research from professors at NII. This incentive program is an opportunity for professional and personal development.

Program Overview:

In November 2020, as a response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, NII launched an on-line version of its Internship program, in which students work remotely on research projects under the management of NII supervisors. We have received nearly 20 applications. Due to the success of this initiative, and in view of the ongoing restrictions on travel to Japan, we are extending the application period for this on-line Internship program until 30 September 2021.

As of this writing, NII is not yet in a position to accept Internship students for on-site research activities at Tokyo. However, we have instituted a flexible process that would allow students to apply for on-site Internships as soon as travel restrictions are lifted (until then, no applications will be considered). This special process for on-site Internship applications will remain in place until 30 September 2021.

Choose up to three topics out of the list of topics from NII's website and establish contact with NII supervisors who match the desired research topic. For a successful application you will need a letter of acceptance from the supervising professor (this can also be the e-mail correspondence etc.)

A nomination by JASEC at TU Wien is necessary as no direct application from candidates is accepted.

Do not send applications directly to NII as your documents will be checked by Prof. Thomas Eiter and Prof. A Min Tjoa before a nomination is sent to the NII.

  • For a successful application, applicants need to receive an informal letter of consent (an informal E-Mail is sufficient) which states that a potential supervisor agrees to welcome the applicant in his/her lab.
  • Available research topics and application forms can be downloaded from the NII Website.
