Career Development at TU Wien
Establishing Career Paths
The topic of career paths at TU Wien can be understood as a strategic approach that aims to establish clear, transparent, and future-oriented career paths for all employees. This involves integrating individual development needs with institutional goals. The focus is not only on academic career options at TU Wien, but also on career paths in (administrative) management or in the technical field within TU Wien (positions in the third space), as well as careers away from TU Wien in other institutions in the higher education sector and in the non-university sector. Well-thought-out and systematic career planning should include networking between all relevant stakeholders responsible for career counseling and development within TU Wien, as well as with external partners such as other universities, companies, public administration, and funding agencies. It is essential to create conditions that enable university members to develop long-term career prospects, whether within the academic world or beyond. These conditions should be communicated efficiently and transparently to all affected groups from the beginning of the contract period and on an ongoing basis, and should comply with all legal requirements and TUW internal regulations.
General Staff
From the employee's point of view, the topic of career development opens up new perspectives and, depending on the specific structure, the possibility of a higher degree of self-fulfillment. And to this end, we always have the entire TU Wien in mind, not “just” our own department or unit.
Newly advertised positions can be advertised as junior positions, and over the course of the first few years, the new employee learns the necessary skills to advance to a higher-level (senior) position. This allows us to train people for positions for which there are no candidates on the job market. Both job descriptions must be included in the job advertisement, and a training plan must be drawn up in consultation with Human Resources Development.
With TU_upGrade (PDF), opens in new window, TU Wien offers motivated and talented employees the opportunity to develop and remain with TU Wien in the long term.
TU_upSkill/ reSkill (PDF), opens in new window complements this by offering employees the opportunity to restore their employability (the ability of employees to meet the requirements of the workplace), as disruptive changes are the order of the day in times of a rapidly changing labor market.
Academic Staff
Doctoral students are usually employed at TU Wien on fixed-term training contracts and also study for their doctorates here. This dual position as student and employee is something special.
The postdoctoral phase serves to establish oneself scientifically in one's own field, to acquire one's own projects, and to move toward independent teaching. In many cases, it is completed with a habilitation and the awarding of the “venia docendi.”
In the area of scientific staff, a career option is available, particularly through the prospect of a Tenure Track Position.
In any case, we invite managers and employees to contact us for a personal consultation to clarify whether and which model is a suitable option for you.
