Lecture (daily from 02.10 – 14.10.2025)
- Each lecture lasts 90 minutes and takes place daily from 08:15 to 09:00 and from 09:15 to 10:00 (Thursday, October 2 to Tuesday, October 14) in the Nöbauer lecture hall FH 8 (Freihaus, Wiedner Hauptstraße 8-10, yellow section, 2. floor) without attendance control.
- The lecture will be held in German. However, you are of course welcome to ask your questions in English.
- The lecture takes place at the same times and in the same lecture hall as the Analysis 1 (VO 101.674) and Linear Algebra and Geometry 1 (VO 104.504) lectures, which begin only after the Introduction to working mathematically has concluded.
- The lecture Linear Algebra and Geometry 1 starts on Wednesday 15.10.
- The lecture Analysis 1 starts on Friday 17.10.
- There is no final exam in the lecture Introduction to working mathematically
Exercise sessions on Wednesday 08.10.2025 and Tuesday 14.10.2025
- The exercises take place in small groups.
- Participation in both exercise sessions is mandatory!
- The first exercise session will take place on Wednesday 08.10.2025, as part of the Linear Algebra and Geometry 1 exercise (same exercise group + time slot + instructor as for Linear Algebra and Geometry 1).
- The second exercise session will take place on Tuesday 14.10.2025, as part of the Analysis 1 exercise (same exercise group + time slot + instructor as for Analysis 1).
Consultation hour on Tuesday 07.10.2025 and Monday 13.10.2025
- During consultation hour on Tuesday 07.10.2025, 11:00-13:00 and Monday 13.10.2025, 10:00-12:00 in the Zeichensaal 3, you will have the opportunity to receive assistance with the exercise sheets.
Registration
- You must register in TISS until 12.10.2025 for the lecture Introduction to working mathematically (VU 101.672).
- You must register in TISS until 06.10.2025 for the Exercises in Analysis 1 (UE 101.A55) and Linear Algebra und Geometry 1 (UE 104.694).
Questions about the lecture
- The lecture will be held in person (in German). Of course, you are welcome to ask questions at any time during the lecture.
- You can also post your questions in the TISS forum after the lecture, where they will be answered promptly.
Learning objective of the course
- The aim of the Introduction to working mathematically is to build a bridge between school mathematics and higher mathematics, enabling you to better follow the content of Analysis 1 (VO 101.674 + UE 101.A55) and Linear Algebra and Geometry 1 (VO 104.504 + 104.694).
- What is a proof?
- Elementary propositional logic and predicate logic, logical reasoning
- Sets and elements
- Relations and functions
- Natural numbers and mathematical induction
