TUWEL Update to Moodle 4.3

On February 13, numerous Moodle instances of the TU Wien, including TUWEL, were successfully updated to version 4.3. This update is expected to bring optimizations in usability and new improvements. We have compiled some highlights from the update for you.

Streamlining the Design

The new interface introduced in the winter semester of 2023 has been optimized with this update. The design has been streamlined, leading to a reduction of about a third. Icons for materials and activities have been revised to make the course design more compact and clearer without affecting operation on mobile devices.

Changes to "External Tools"

This update aims to enhance privacy protection and limit the sharing of student data with external systems. The use of external tools will now be more strictly managed: Only pre-configured systems such as Zoom, Möbius, MATLAB Grader, JupyterHub, and LeTTO can be integrated. Instructors will find a list of available, pre-configured external tools in the "More" section. If needed, new tools can be requested from TUWEL support.

Introduction of a Confidentiality Agreement

Starting March 1, 2024, a new confidentiality agreement will come into effect. Before logging in, users must confirm that all information – especially grades, evaluations, feedback, etc., in TUWEL courses – is confidential.

New Self-Study Courses

To support usage, the TUWEL team is introducing two new self-study courses:

•    Quick Start to TUWEL: This course is intended for new users or those who want to refresh their knowledge. It provides a quick overview of TUWEL and its most important functionalities.

•    Quick Start to Online Teaching: This course is planned as a compact "reference work" where information on the most important topics and questions of online teaching is explained.

Editor Enhancements

The standard "Tiny MCE" editor has been enhanced with new important functionalities, such as syntax highlighting and a useful full-screen feature. With the Moodle update and the integrated syntax highlighting, the Geshi filter was discontinued on February 13. Users are encouraged to switch to the new syntax highlighting.

To introduce the new features of TUWEL 4.3, the TUWEL team is hosting an online webinar. It will take place on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, from 3:00 to 4:00 PM. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions directly to the team. The live demonstration will provide a comprehensive insight into the updated platform.
