The control of magnetism using voltages instead of magnetic fields is an important goal of current research, holding great potential for future spintronic and magnetic memory devices. An emerging, highly energy-efficient concept for the voltage control of magnetism is magneto-ionics, which utilizes electrochemical reactions for this purpose. In this talk, I will provide an overview of magneto-ionic research, introduce key methods for measuring magnetic properties in situ during electrochemical treatment, and highlight two recent examples based on hydrogen and oxygen electrochemistry.
In the first example, the reversible electrochemical hydrogen absorption into Co/Pd multilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy is used to control their magnetic properties.[1] It is found that hydrogen increases coercivity continuously by up to 20% with increasing hydrogen concentration in the multilayers, which is quantified electrochemically. In addition, the domain wall velocity in this system can be reduced by an order of magnitude via electrochemical hydrogen absorption. This allows demonstrating the complete halt of a propagating domain wall upon voltage application.
The second example introduces the electrochemical reduction and re-oxidation of native oxides on magnetic surfaces as another versatile mechanism for magneto-ionics. Building on the simple iron thin-film system, in which coercivity can be decreased/increased upon reduction/re-oxidation of the native surface iron oxide, it is shown how this mechanism can also be applied to more complex magnetic layer systems in the form of an iron-based magnetic spin-valve heterostructure.[2]
