Citizen science in sustainable urban development

Exchanges were held between Viennese museums, the city administration and libraries on the topic of citizen science at public institutions.

Citizen Science Workshop

On 27 February 2024, experts from various institutions came together at the OPUSH workshop “Citizen science in sustainable city development” to explore how citizen science can be integrated into urban sustainability transformations. The direct participation of citizens in research was held to be a decisive factor in achieving advances in city development, transdisciplinary cooperation and open science. Museums and libraries were identified as important actors that reach out to a diverse public due to their infrastructure, resources and expertise and are well placed to support citizen science projects as knowledge hubs. Discussion at the workshop also centered on challenges such as limited time resources and the requirement for institutional changes. The workshop highlighted the importance of citizen science for urban development and for fostering an open, sustainable society.

The institutions participating in the workshop were: NHM Natural History Museum Vienna; MAK Museum of applied Arts; MUMOK; MuseumsQuartier Wien; TU Wien future.lab and TU Wien Bibliothek; City of Vienna (Municipal Departments 21, 22 and Executive Group for Construction and Technology); and Volkskundemuseum (The Austrian Museum of Folk Life and Folk Art).

The workshop was held at the Natural History Museum’s Deck 50.
