TUWEL 5.0 Update

On August 26, 2025, TUWEL, the central e-learning platform of TU Wien, was updated to the latest Moodle version 5.0. We have compiled some highlights from the update for you.

questionnaires

Courses can now have more than one question collection. A newly created and therefore empty course does not contain any question collections. In addition, changes to questions now affect all tests in all courses where they are used. If you want to assign role permissions to question collections, this is now possible without course access. You can find more information about question collections and tests in the attached document.

New navigation element “Activities”

The new display lists learning elements by activity type and helps teachers keep track of progress. For the “Assignment” type, it shows deadlines, submission status, and pending evaluations. Depending on the activity type, there is different information, e.g., the workshop phase or the completion status for work materials, which are summarized in a separate section. This view is also available to students. They can see essential information at a glance.

New function TinyMCE-Editor

One of the new features is the ability to import Microsoft Word files (docx). The formatting is retained as much as possible. In addition to the icon, importing also works via drag & drop. It is now also possible to add leak text query types to a dialog box. For more information, see the attached documentin german“Was ist neu in TUWEL 5.0, opens in new window”.

New features in exporting grades to TISS

In the new TUWEL version, the export function for the student list has been modernized and expanded to include familiar filter options from the participant menu. This forms the basis for future functions such as direct grade export to TISS without a CSV detour.

Define communication channel

In preparation for Matrix chat integration, a main communication channel can be specified in the new TUWEL version, e.g., a course forum or an external Matrix link. All users receive an icon for quick access, which is particularly useful on mobile devices. The setting can be found under “More” > “Communication.”

Many other new features are listed in the document “Was ist neu in TUWEL 5.0, opens in new window”.
