Bridging Mobility and Policy

Marietta started her career with a Bachelor’s in International Business and gained experience as a Junior Strategy Specialist at ÖBB. Before joining the MSc Environmental Technology & International Affairs (ETIA) program, she interned at the UN Environment Programme in Vienna. ETIA allowed her to build on her prior experience and to gain technical knowledge of mobility technologies and their environmental impact, complemented by insights into relevant regulation. Her master’s thesis analyzed the life cycle carbon emissions of electric and diesel buses + based on the case of Wiener Linien. This allowed her to develop potential decarbonization strategies for city bus fleets. At GIZ in Beijing, she combines her experience from the mobility sector as well as her knowledge from ETIA to support the Transformation of the Mobility Sector in Germany and East Asia and to promote cooperation on the topic.

"ETIA prepared me to understand both technical aspects and policy frameworks, which is crucial for the global mobility transition," she explains.

Encompassing business, law, and technology

Eric’s journey began with a degree in Business Law at the University of Innsbruck, where his interest in energy and environmental law was sparked. ETIA broadened his understanding of renewable energies, project finance, and international energy policy. After earlier internships in law and consulting firms, Eric worked at the World Energy Council throughout the ETIA degree. His Master’s thesis engaged with derisking renewable energy projects in emerging markets and developing economies and was supported by a further internship in renewable energy finance.

"The combination of technological foundations and contextual awareness from ETIA is very valuable in navigating political international environments," Eric reflects.

Today, he works with GIZ in Beijing as part of the Sino-German Energy Partnership, facilitating knowledge exchange on the energy transition and industrial decarbonization.

Eric and Marietta’s careers exemplify ETIA’s mission: to train professionals capable of working at the intersection of technology, policy, and international collaboration. Their experiences highlight how the program equips graduates with the skills and confidence to make a tangible impact on the world’s energy and mobility transition.
