Field trip to the S31 construction site

Excursion

On May 23, 2024, TU Wien cordially invites interested students to an exciting excursion to the construction sites of the S31 in Sieggraben.

This unique opportunity offers insights into the construction of four new bridges and the use of innovative construction methods and materials as part of the safety expansion of the Burgenland Expressway.

The excursion will also provide a platform to discuss innovative contract models for high-risk projects, sustainability in the construction industry, the reuse of excavated material and the recycling of concrete. There will be a particular focus on ecological construction supervision, which ensures the protection of local flora and fauna.

Date and meeting point of departure:

Date: May 23, 2024
Time: 07:40 a.m.
Place: Wiedner Hauptstraße 1, 1040 Vienna

Excursion program:

  • Tour of the S31 construction site in Sieggraben, including construction work on four new bridges with a total of 11,500 linear meters of bored piles and 37,000 m³ of concrete.
  • Discussion of alternative contract models for high-risk projects.
  • Insights into sustainability measures, such as the reuse of excavated material and the recycling of concrete.
  • Presentation of ecological construction supervision to protect the local flora and fauna.

Required equipment: Participants must wear safety shoes, a hard hat and a high-visibility vest.

Deposit and registration: A deposit of €20 per person is required, which will be refunded upon participation. Registrations are possible until May 16, 2024 at the IBB secretariat (AE EG 05).

About the project: ASFINAG has been working intensively on the safety expansion of the S31 since March 2024, with the construction of the new bridges taking center stage. This construction work is not only a technical masterpiece due to the challenging terrain topography, but also an example of sustainable construction. The rocky excavation pit and the concrete demolition of the auxiliary structures will be recycled on site to minimize the environmental impact.

The focus is also on an innovative pilot project: the ASFINAG alliance contract. This approach aims to share risks and allow the contractual partners to participate in the success of the project, which is particularly important for high-risk projects.

This excursion not only promises insights into current construction progress and challenges, but also into the future of the construction industry and the role of sustainability in major projects. A unique opportunity for anyone interested in civil engineering, sustainability and innovative project management approaches.

We look forward to an informative and exciting excursion with you!
