Bringing sustainability transitions “on the ground”: New publication by Johannes Suitner

Over the past decades, Transition Studies have made a significant contribution to our understanding of the drivers and barriers of sustainability transitions. Transition scholars, however, criticize the lacking implementation of sustainability goals in practice. In their new article, Johannes Suitner (SRF, TU Vienna) and Univ.-Prof. Meike Levin-Keitel (University of Vienna) address this theory-practice gap. They argue that spatial planning can help operationalize Transition Studies' abstract system knowledge and thus contribute to moving from abstract calls for "one great transformation" to concrete local transformations. They show that spatial planners have unique spatial, instrumental, and future knowledge that is necessary for the implementation of sustainability projects and therefore call on the discipline to become even more involved in Transition Studies.
