Dear visitors of the Tuesday Lounge,

In May 2024, the Tuesday Lounge will reopen with four exciting TUesday Loung talks, starting the summer semester program with the popular event "Tuesday Lounge goes Cinema" on May 14th, beloved by TU staff and students.

14.05 Tuesday Lounge goes Cinema "Archive of the Future" at the Stadtkino.

How to make the best use of our existing resources in scientific practice?

The documentary "Archive of the Future" , opens an external URL in a new windowoffers an entertaining and informative behind-the-scenes look at the Natural History Museum in Vienna. There, with meticulous energy, collection, research, archiving, and reflection take place - more than 30 million objects have been gathered here over the centuries, to be questioned anew time and again. This cinematic homage to a microcosm of institutional research encourages reflection on scientific practice in general - especially at a time when new technologies enable us to climb anew the "shoulders of giants" highlighted not least by Isaac Newton (as a metaphor for the accumulated knowledge of our ancestors). What can we learn from the past for the future? And, crucially, how can we manage the existing knowledge repositories to ensure they contribute effectively to reshaping our practices toward socio-ecological transformation? Following the film, scientists from the fields of architecture and research data management will discuss these questions with director Joerg Burger.

Guests:

  • Joerg Burger, Regisseur
  • Barbara Sanchez Solis, Head of Center for Research Data Management
  • Bernadette Krejs, Faculty of Architecture and Planning

Moderation: Simon Güntner, Head of Research Unit of Sociology

The discussion will be conducted in German. However, participants are invited to ask questions in English as well.

The film is provided with English subtitles.

Program:

  • From 5:00 PM: Meeting point at Stadtkino
  • 5:30 PM: Admission to the hall
  • 5:50 PM: Welcome and introduction
  • 6:00 PM: Start of the film "Archiv der Zukunft" (92 minutes)
  • 7:30 PM: End of the film and start of the discussion
  • 8:30 PM: End of the discussion

The seats are free but the number of seats is limited! Please sign up, opens an external URL in a new window soon to secure your spot.

11.06 Register Research - Opening Digital Collections at 5:30 pm

The unlocking of data registers from the public sector enables the combination and analysis of data that was previously inaccessible to researchers. This newfound access promotes innovative research, evidence-based evaluations, and the development of new strategies or programs.

In this TUesday Lounge talk, new registry research approaches will be presented and illustrated using studies from spatial and transport planning. The Register Research Platform, which enables scientists to access public sector registry data and helps shape the framework conditions for its use, will also be introduced.

Our guests are:

The discussion will be conducted in German. However, participants are invited to ask questions in English as well.

The Lounge Talk will take place in the TUesday Lounge (Kontaktraum, Gußhausstraße 27, 6th floor) at 5:30 pm. The lounge opens at 5 pm, and small snacks and drinks will be available.

We look forward to a fruitful exchange of ideas!

18.06 Urban Vacancy - Housing Activism in Cape Town and Dublin at 5:30 pm

Bringing vacancy, occupation, and commoning into conversation, the TUesday lounge presentations from Cape Town and Dublin will demonstrate how claims to and experiments within vacant properties produce spaces of commoning and stage broader political claims to the city.

The examples from a northern and a southern city illustrate how urban vacancies are potential sites of speculation, innovation, or politicisation – and how emancipatory efforts can emerge through housing activism.

The TUesday lounge will also use vacancy and its specific form to shape the built environment as the starting point for a discussion on how we can bring together distinct genealogies of urban thought and produce research that cuts across the North/South divide. The discussion will tackle the challenges of cross-learning among academics, occupiers, and social movements, as well as those of global comparative research collaborations.

25.06 Building within Existing Structures - Demolition or Design? at 6 pm

The field of "Building within Existing Structures," the future area of activity for planners, engineers, and architects, faces challenges and questions: Are European cities fully built? Do they only need to be rebuilt and adapted to today's needs? What potentials and possibilities lie in the existing structures, and how do we design when we no longer discard and demolish?

In the context of the climate crisis, we discuss with experts from heritage conservation, building physics, and architecture how building with, within, and on existing structures can open up current and future potentials, challenges, and opportunities in the construction sector.

Our guests:

Thomas Bednar, opens a file in a new window, Building Physics
