Prof. Fröhlich studied technical chemistry at the TU Wien, after his doctorate, he stayed as postdoc at the University of Salford (GB). After his return, he received the habilitation in the field of organic chemistry. He was appointed as guest professor at the STU Bratislava, the Masaryk University Brno, the TU Dresden and at the University of Heidelberg. In 2003, he was appointed professor of Organic Chemistry at the TU Wien.

In addition to his success as a researcher in the field of heterocycle chemistry, Prof. Fröhlich was mainly active in research management, he headed the Institute for Organic Chemistry from 1998-2002. As chair of the former chemistry department, he was the driving force behind the structural reforms that form the basis for the Faculty of Technical Chemistry in her present form. From 2003 to 2004, he was head of the Institute for Applied Synthetic Chemistry; in 2004, he was appointed as the first dean of the Faculty of Technical Chemistry. Since 2011, he has been Vice Rector for Research & Innovation at the TU Wien.

During his tenure as dean, he managed the building of the new Lehartrakt, the related renovation of the Campus Getreidemarkt, and the modernization of the large-scale equipment of the faculty.
