E166-01 - Research Unit Mechanical Process Engineering and Clean Air Technology
Developing scalable process solutions for cleaner production and material circularity
We focus on developing mechanical and process-engineering solutions that drive the circular use of materials and the reduction of emissions. Our research covers recycling technologies, textile reprocessing, and the design of urban resource flows, as well as clean-air technologies that safeguard air quality in industrial environments. By using mechanical process design, we create methods and tools that enable closed-loop material cycles and cleaner production.
Our work extends from laboratory-scale experiments to industrial application. We collaborate closely with industry and public partners to transfer process innovations into practice. Through these partnerships, we aim to increase resource efficiency, reduce waste generation, and minimize the environmental footprint of manufacturing processes — contributing to a circular and climate-positive economy.
The main research topics in this research unit are:
- Particle technology
- Dust extraction technology
- Particle measurement technology
- Elektrokinetic material recycling
- Purification of dusts
- Recovery of valuable materials
- Fiber technology
- Fiber characterization and recycling
- Natural fibers and renewable raw materials
- Recycling technology and systems
- Municipal solid waste
- Mineral waste and raw materials
In addition, the research unit hosts the CD-Laboratory for a recycling-based Circular Economy. This research initiative aims to give a scientific-technical support for Austria and the EU to achieve recycling targets for wastes.
