Grätzl-Ladezone: We are researching the further development of the loading zones in Vienna

Together with the Vienna Chamber of Commerce (WKO), we are conducting a pilot project in Mariahilf in cooperation with the district! The Grätzl-Ladezone pursues the idea of combining the advantages of a loading zone for entrepreneurs, customers and residents.

The Grätzl loading zone - a new project of the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber and the research unit MOVE

With the "Grätzl loading zone" we want to create a parking space for all people who carry out a loading activity.

The intensity of the use of public space for urban goods transport has increased in recent years, partly due to the growing online trade. Designated loading zones should help to solve traffic problems and ensure efficient supply. In order to optimise the organisation of loading zones, evidence-based decision-making is necessary. The needs of delivery companies and local customers have to be brought in line with the strategic goals of the municipality and the actual demand. The needs of residents must also be taken into account. A well-organised loading zone infrastructure can have positive effects on the city's population - for example through the reorganisation of public space and improved air quality through traffic reduction - as well as increase efficiency for businesses and logistics companies.

The Grätzl loading zone will be tested at two locations in Mariahilf until the end of the year:

  • At Loquaiplatz 9 (at the corner of Königsegggasse) and
  • at Windmühlgasse 28.

Scientific monitoring

The pilot test is accompanied by our research unit at the TU Wien. During a four-week period from mid-November to mid-December, the use of the loading zone will be automatically recorded by sensors attached to the ground. In addition, colleagues from the research department will observe the use of the loading zone on site in order to detect any problems in the surrounding area. This allows us to identify certain usage patterns and frequently occurring challenges, which we then use to train a GIS tool.

This GIS tool will optimise the strategic planning of loading zones in the future, for example by identifying suitable locations for the creation of additional Grätzl loading zones. In addition, the collected data will help to continuously improve the already established loading zones.
