Winter tourism is the subject of much debate, but one aspect is often overlooked. When in winter tourism regions COD and N loads increase by a factor of 4 to 5 in short time and temperatures are below 12°C, it can become very challenging for wastewatertreatment plants to meet their targets in nutrients removal and to comply with thresholds in the effluents.
This new paper by Felix Pilz et al. presents the results of the simulation of different smart operation approaches for the case-study plant in Montafon.
Key outcome: a 35% increase in nitrification capacity in existing wwtps designed as activated sludge processes can be achieved through optimized operating conditions without additional high investments.
