On October 17, 2023, the MSc ETIA16 group embarked on their first excursion to the Energiepark Bruck/Leitha, opens an external URL in a new window, located about an hour outside of Vienna, Bruck an der Leitha is a flat and windy region, which are perfect conditions for a wind farm.

Energiepark Bruck/Leitha produces different types of renewable energy for the region. It was a truly inspiring experience, especially as students learned that sometimes kickstarts to innovation are dependent on the trust, perseverance and courage of simple citizens just like us. Seeing the renewable energy transition in action was not only very informative but even motivated some of the participants to overcome their fear of heights and enjoy the view from one of the few wind turbines open to the public worldwide.

The second stop of the excursion was at the biogas plant of Bruck/Leitha. It has been operational since 2004 and was converted in 2014 to produce biomethane gas. Students learned about the extensive process of fermenting food and waste products from the food industry to produce biogas, converted by various scientific methods involving heat and power. To endure the olfactory challenge at the biogas plant was a bit of a challenge.
