No leadership, no successful strategy

The implementation of a good strategy always depends on the right leadership style. The strategy may look good on paper, but it can only unfold its effectiveness when it reaches the hearts and minds of the employees.

[Translate to English:] Leadership

"The best strategy is not effective if managers cannot implement it within their team, because then Peter Drucker quote applies: "Culture eats strategy for breakfast."
- Univ. Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Güttel, University Professor of Human Resources and Management - Institute of Management Sciences, TU Wien

Whether transformational leadership, charismatic leadership, servant leadership, and other leadership styles, all of these always only illuminate one aspect: the individual. Many leadership theories primarily serve individual puzzle pieces on the topic of leadership. The view of the whole, the so-called big picture, is neglected. Above all, the synthesis of skills and the mindset of the manager is missing. Because technical, methodical, conceptual-strategic skills alone do not help without the right mindset.

The new concept "the value chain of leadership" by Univ. Prof. Dr. Güttel integrates all important aspects of leadership. It combines the three dimensions of execution, commitment and enhancement - all three connect skills & mindset.

The first dimension, execution, is task-related and aims at the topics of organization, control and "assigning": Which priorities are to be set in the work process, which employee does which topics well? What can be delegated? How to keep focus?

The second dimension, engagement, relates to people and includes social processes. How can motivation be controlled, how can trust be generated in the team, how can team cohesion be achieved?

Finally, the enhancement, which aims at a learning mindset and demands the further development of the manager, their team and the organization.

The value chains of leadership are to be used differently depending on the context and phase of the company. Not every ability of a leader is relevant in every context and at every point in time. The conscious use of different value chains of leadership is anchored in the manager's mindset.

Mindset as a regulator of leadership style

Especially in turbulent times, it doesn't help to statically stick to a single management style. Rather, it is important to adapt flexibly and dynamically to the circumstances of the business environment.

"To navigate through stormy times, you need 'ambidexterity': sometimes you have to play the keyboard with both hands, sometimes with one, sometimes with the other."
- Univ. Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Güttel, University Professor of Human Resources and Management - Institute of Management Sciences, TU Wien

For the effective implementation of new strategies, a manager must "be able to play all the pieces". In order for this to succeed, the appropriate leadership style is required in the sense of the value chain of leadership. Only those who have mastered this value chain well can use the company's core competencies efficiently with their team and at the same time be open to new strategies and innovative paths.
