The ERC grants of the European Research Council (ERC) are probably the most prestigious and highest endowed grants in Europe. On September 5, 2023, it was announced who will receive this year's "ERC Starting Grants" - these are grants for young scientists who are still at the beginning of their scientific career but have already achieved excellent results. The highly endowed funding is intended to give them the opportunity to position themselves at the international forefront with their own research group.

TU Wien is pleased to receive three of these awards this year: one from the Institute of Atomic Physics and one from the TU WIen: Julian Leonard from TU Wien's Atomic Institute will conduct research on quantum simulators that can be used to answer unsolved questions in solid-state physics. Katta Spiel of the Institute for Visual Computing and Human-Centered Technology will research how people with disabilities perceive their access to technology. Xiao-Hua Qin, who earned his PhD at TU Wien and is currently conducting research at ETH Zürich, will return to TU Wien with his ERC grant to conduct research on artificial bone tissue fabrication in a biochip.
