Predatory Publishing - Current Trends *English*

Workshop

Introduction and current trends

Due to the high publication pressure in science and the ever increasing number of journals, especially in the open access area, the risk of publishing in a journal of inferior or questionable quality has increased. So-called "predatory journals" charge money for services that are not provided or are of inferior quality. Publishing in such journals can lead to research results being neither noticed nor taken seriously. With its unethical and fraudulent practices, this so-called "predatory publishing" not only directly harms the scientists concerned, but also the Open Access movement as a whole and the trust in science itself.

The workshop will use practical examples to clarify the following questions:

  •  What is Predatory Publishing?
  • How do I recognize predatory journals (or conferences)?
  • What criteria can I use to evaluate a journal?
