Matthias Weil completed his degree in chemistry at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen (Germany) and was awarded his doctorate there in 1999. Immediately afterwards, he took up an assistant position at the Vienna University of Technology, where he habilitated in 2006 with a topic on solid-state chemistry and was appointed associate professor. After a one-year stay in 2007/2008 as a substitute professor (W3) at the University of Ulm (Germany), he returned to the TU, where he still works today.

His main research interests are the synthesis, crystal growth and crystal structure elucidation of (novel) inorganic compounds and their subsequent physical/chemical characterization to determine their characteristics.
