TU Wien citizen science community is growing

True to its motto “Technology for People”, TU Wien is focusing on citizen science.

Citizen Science Community

In April 2023, TU Wien joined the Citizen Science Network Austria. The network was founded in 2017 and is coordinated by the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna (BOKU), comprising institutions from the fields of science, research, education and practice with the following common goals:

  • To further establish citizen science in Austria
  • To promote the quality of citizen science in Austria
  • To strengthen the profile of citizen science in Austria

The network’s online platform is "Österreich forscht" (www.citizen-science.at), where TU Wien is also now listed as a partner organisation, opens an external URL in a new window.

In addition, TU Wien Bibliothek is actively involved in the European Citizen Science Association, opens an external URL in a new window and is expanding its advisory services for members of TU Wien regarding citizen science.

At TU Wien, citizen science is playing an increasingly important role particularly in the areas of urban development and spatial planning, mobility, circular economy, digital tools and technologies. Examples of research projects with a citizen science focus include OPUSH, an international research project aimed at making knowledge about sustainable development visible and accessible to local communities. To this end, the library is opened to the public as a centre of transformative development. Other citizen science projects are Werkstatt Neu Leopoldau, opens an external URL in a new window, focused on social sustainability within the settlement process of a new  urban neighbourhood; City Layers, opens an external URL in a new window, a project to make individual experiences in public urban spaces available to urban planners so that citizens’ needs can be identified and taken into account; or Recycling Heroes, opens an external URL in a new window, a project aimed at raising awareness about e-waste, especially among secondary school pupils but also in society in general, by combining circular economy principles with citizen science methods.
