Thomas Dillinger studied spatial planning at TU Wien and completed his dissertation on endogenous regional development in 2003. From 1993 to 2005 he worked as a teacher and researcher at the Institute for Urban Design and Spatial Planning. From 2005 to 2020 he headed the Research Unit of Regional Planning and Development at the Faculty of Architecture and Spatial Planning. His teaching and research focuses on planning instruments in Central and Eastern and South-Eastern Europe, cross-border and regional planning, as well as endogenous development. He has been a guest professor in Belgrade, Brno, Gdansk, Sofia, Novi Sad, Pecs, Pristina and Tirana. He has also organised several joint study projects in the field of urban and regional planning with universities in Albania, America, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Czechia, Germany, Hungary, Kosovo Macedonia, Oman, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia. From 2010 to 2013 he chaired the Study Commission for Spatial Planning at TU Wien. From 2013 to 2019, Thomas Dillinger served as Vice Dean of Studies for Spatial Planning at the Vienna University of Technology, and since 2020 he has been Dean of Studies. From 2010 to 2019, he was Austria's national representative in the Association of European Schools of Planning (AESOP). He has recently been elected President of the AESOP for the period from 2021 to 2025.
