Our colleague Johannes Suitner, Head of Urban Transformation Research Team at the Urban and Regional Research Department, took part in a panel discussion with experts from academia and practice on December 11 on the topic of "New roles, new paths? Practical planning reflection on the designability of transformation".

Against the backdrop of comprehensive ecological, economic and social challenges, complex spatial transformation processes are imminent. Spatial planning plays a decisive role in promoting targeted change towards sustainability. This involves overcoming outdated paths and adopting alternative approaches to spatial development. This challenge raises a number of questions, which were discussed together during the discussion:

What skills and tools does spatial planning have to design, coordinate and initiate transformation processes? How are the roles and tasks in spatial planning changing? Which new approaches and methods are gaining in importance and what effects does this have on established planning concepts? How can transformation ultimately be designed and planned?

Other participants in the discussion were:

  • MEIKE LEVIN-KEITEL: TU Dortmund University, Faculty of Spatial Planning, Head of Spatial Transformation in the Digital Age
  • WOLFGANG GERLICH: PlanSinn, Managing Director & Partner
  • RUDOLF SCHEUVENS: TU Wien, future.lab - platform for inter- and transdisciplinary teaching and research, Chair of Local Spatial Planning and Urban Development Planning
  • OANA STANCIOIU: nonconform, architect & environmental psychologist
  • JOHANNES SUITNER: TU Vienna, Head of Urban Transformation Research Team at the Department of Urban and Regional Research

Moderation: PETRA HIRSCHLER und SUSAN AHN

The discourse evening was part of the course "Integrated Development Planning - A Planning Game for Transformation" and is organized by the research areas of Local Spatial Planning, Regional Development, Landscape and Transport System Planning at TU Wien. This course is part of the cross-faculty annual theme 2023/2024 "Transformation of the existing".
