Curriculum Vitae
Wolfgang H. Güttel is a Full Professor of Leadership & Strategy at the Institute of Management Science at the TU Wien (Vienna University of Technology; Austria) and Dean of the TU Wien Academy for Continuing Education. His main field of research concerns leadership, strategic change, and learning in the context of newly emerging technologies in complex and dynamically evolving environments. His work has been published in various academic books and journals such as Long Range Planning, Strategic Organization, Technological Forecasting & Social Change, Human Relations, Academy of Management Learning & Education, Leadership, Management Learning, International Journal of Management Review, Harvard Business Review, Schmalenbach Business Review, International Journal of Human Resource Management, Journal of Business Research or Austrian Management Review. He is also engaged in executive education and consulting to advise leaders, firms, and public organizations on managing strategic change. His executive teaching focuses on leadership, team development, organization, strategy, and change management. His academic career includes roles as Dean and Managing Director of the JKU Management School LIMAK (Linz International Management Academy) between 2011 and 2015, Professor at the Universities of Linz (Austria), Kassel, and Hamburg (Germany), Research Fellow at the Universities of Liverpool (United Kingdom) and Padua (Italy) and Assistant Professor at the WU Vienna (Austria). Before embarking upon his academic career, he acted as Management Consultant at Daimler-Benz AG in Stuttgart (Germany), at Diebold Management Consulting in Vienna (Austria), and founded his consultancy Güttel Management Consulting, Training, & Research in Vienna (Austria).

Research
Das Hauptforschungsgebiet ist Führung, strategischer Wandel und Lernen im Zusammenhang mit neu entstehenden Technologien in komplexen und sich dynamisch entwickelnden Umgebungen. Mein Forschungsinteresse ist geprägt von der Wechselwirkung zwischen Stabilität und Wandel. Ungewissheit, Komplexität und Mehrdeutigkeit kennzeichnen die gegenwärtige Situation in vielen Märkten und Volkswirtschaften. Mit anderen Worten: Unternehmen und Führungskräfte müssen den Wandel erleichtern oder Stabilität in einem sich disruptiv verändernden Umfeld erreichen. Die Untersuchung des Entwicklungspfads von Organisationen mit ihren eingebetteten organisatorischen Routinen und Regelsystemen - manchmal über Jahrzehnte hinweg - wirft ein Licht auf die Dynamik zwischen der Nutzung vorhandener Fähigkeiten und der Erleichterung der Erkundung, um neue Fähigkeiten zu schaffen. Im Laufe der Organisationsentwicklung müssen Unternehmen stets ein angemessenes Gleichgewicht zwischen den widersprüchlichen Anforderungen von kurzfristiger Effizienz und Innovationsfähigkeit finden, was als Ambidexterität bezeichnet wird. HRM und Führung tragen wesentlich dazu bei, das Gleichgewicht zwischen Exploration und Exploitation zu finden. In meiner Forschung konzentriere ich mich daher auf das dynamische Zusammenspiel von Strategie, Organisation, HRM und Führung. Bislang wissen wir jedoch nur wenig über die Rolle der Regelsysteme von Organisationen (formale Regeln, soziale Normen und soziale Konventionen, die organisatorische Routinen darstellen) und die Entscheidungsheuristiken von Führungskräften, die organisatorische Entwicklungsprozesse in unvorhersehbaren Märkten steuern. Wir verwenden die Verhaltenstheorie des Unternehmens als theoretische Grundlage. Die meisten unserer Studien basieren auf Fallstudien, die eine längsschnittliche Prozessperspektive mit dem Ziel der Theorieentwicklung einnehmen.
