ArcelorMittal Steel South Trophy 2007

The aim of the competition is to design a barrier-free bridge over the Handelskai in the area of the Ferry Dusika Stadium / Meiereistraße, as well as to revitalise the riverbank with new leisure, sports and/or gastronomic facilities (swimming pool, stage, etc.).

The design idea should question the concept of a ‘bridge’ and lead to integrative, unconventional solutions. Functional mixtures and an interlocking of the various constructive elements and areas of use were desired. The bridge should be seen as an extension of public space. Bridging was only ONE aspect of such a structure.

The design of the supporting structure should give the material steel and the principle of lightweight construction a significant role.

Assignment

Barrier-free bridging of the Handelskai in the area of the Ferry Dusika Stadium / Meiereistraße, as well as the revitalisation of the riverbank with new functions for leisure, sports and/or gastronomic facilities (swimming pool, stage,...)

The design idea should question the concept of a ‘bridge’ and lead to integrative, unconventional solutions. Functional mixtures and an interlocking of the various constructive elements and areas of use are desired. The bridge should be seen as an extension of public space. Bridging is only ONE aspect of such a structure.

The design of the supporting structure should give steel and the principle of lightweight construction a significant role.

Lightweight construction is to be seen in the context of a sustainable concept and not only in terms of material savings, but also in terms of efficient use, social openness and transparency, as well as in terms of resource and environmentally friendly use of materials (including consideration of production and assembly, reuse, disposal).

The aim of the competition

  • To promote innovative developments in structural design and steel construction
  • To find ideas for the development and connection of the Danube embankment to Vienna's urban infrastructure
  • To promote interdisciplinary cooperation between students of civil engineering and architecture
