Univ.Prof. Amalio Fernandez-Pacheco Chicon, MSc PhD, was appointed as University Professor for Advanced Material Interfaces and Heterostructures at TU Wien with effect from October 1, 2023. He is assigned to the Institute of Applied Physics, opens an external URL in a new window (E134) at the Faculty of Physics.

Amalio Fernandez-Pacheco Chicon comes from Spain and studied physics at the University of Zaragoza. There he also received his doctorate (summa cum laude) in 2009 with a dissertation on "Electrical conduction and magnetic properties of nanoconstrictions and nanowires created by focused electron/ion beam and of Fe₃O₄ thin films,, opens an external URL in a new window". He then began his almost 10-year stay abroad in the UK: in 2010, first as a postdoc at Imperial College London (UK), then until 2018 at the Cavendish Laboratory at the University of Cambridge (first again as a postdoc through a Marie Curie Fellowship and from 2014 as a group leader an "EPSRC and Winton Research Fellowship"). In 2018 he moved to the University of Glasgow (UK), where he was employed as an associate professor from 2019. In 2019 he moved back to Spain as a research group leader at the “Spanish National Research Council” in Zaragoza. In 2021 he was able to obtain the ERC Consolidator Grant “3DNANOMAG, opens an external URL in a new window”.

Amalio Fernandez-Pacheco Chicon's scientific home is now the Research Unit of Physics of three-dimensional Nanomaterials, opens an external URL in a new window, which he also heads. There he is working on 3-dimensional magnetic nanostructures, which will be used particularly for future "green" computer technologies.
