Associate Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Dr.techn. Johann Auer has been assigned to the Institute for Energy Systems and Electric Drives, opens an external URL in a new window (E370) at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, opens an external URL in a new window at TU Wien as Associate Professor for Economics and Regulation of Networks since March 1, 2021.

Johann Auer studied electrical engineering at TU Wien and received his doctorate there in 2000 with a thesis on “Conditions for real competition in a European electricity market, opens an external URL in a new window”. While working on his dissertation, he gained international experience at the University of California, Berkeley (USA) and TU Berlin. However, he remained loyal to TU Wien and began his scientific career here. In 2012, he obtained his venia docendi in energy economics with a habilitation thesis on “Grid regulation in competitive electricity markets: methods, implementation, experience, and requirements for the future, opens an external URL in a new window”. In 2019, he secured a career position, which he successfully completed in 2021 with the qualification of associate professor.

Johann Auer's academic home is the Energy Economics and Energy Efficiency Research Unit, opens an external URL in a new window (also known as the Energy Economics Group, E370-03). There, he has been working on the energy market for more than 20 years, specializing in the integration of renewable energy technologies, and has built up an excellent network through his participation in and coordination of national and international research projects.
