A TU account is available to all students and employees of TU Wien. Therefore, if you are already studying or working at TU Wien, you can apply for a study programme within your TU account.

Application

With your TISS account you can apply for a Study Programme. Your application will guide you through all necessary steps until you are admitted to the program. However, please also always take note of the general admission requirements which are described on the page of the Admissions Office.
With your application for a programme you also take part in the selection procedure. You can use it to process your registration, receive information in the section "Your Application" and can obtain documents.

The documents you hand in as part of the application will only be checked according to certain aspects of content. If your documents are accepted in the application, this does not mean that they are already sufficient for admission to the degree programme. Often you will have to submit additional documents at the time of admission.

Registration

The online registration allows you to participate in the selection procedure. To register, you must have a TU account or create a TISS guest account. Then you can start the application process, opens an external URL in a new window.

  5. upload work samples,

You can change your agreement any time at your TISS account.

You will receive the registration confirmation in your application after you have completed the registration.

Basically no. Please note, however, that the registration must be completed by the end of the registration period. This means that all necessary documents for provisional proof of pre-education must be available by the end of the registration period. A subsequent improvement or submission of documents for the registration is excluded after the deadline and you will be excluded from the further procedure in case of missing evidence.

If you have participated in all the necessary steps of the procedure, if you have completed your registration on time and, if necessary, if you have taken part in the ranking procedure, you will receive a confirmation or a rejection of a study place.
With the confirmation of a study place, you will be admitted to studies either in the winter semester or in the following summer semester of the academic year in which you participated in the selection procedure. After that, the confirmation of a place expires.

Pre-education (stage 1)

With the documents that have to be uploaded in the course of registration, proof of completion of a subject-related eligible bachelor's degree or another subject-related eligible degree of at least the same higher education level at a recognized domestic or foreign post-secondary educational institution (diploma) has to be provided.

In any case, the Bachelor's degree programs in Architecture, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and the Bachelor's degree programs in Computer Science at the Vienna University of Technology are eligible. In order to compensate for significant subject-related differences, alternative or additional courses and examinations amounting to a maximum of 30 ECTS credits may be prescribed by the governing body responsible for study law.

Alternatively, at the time of registration, proof of at least 135 completed ECTS credits of a study program, as well as a confirmation of the educational institution about the expected graduation can be submitted. In this way, the subject-related prerequisites in question are considered to have been fulfilled provisionally, provided that, on the basis of the curriculum for the degree program pursued, the missing subject-related prerequisites (plus 30 ECTS compensatory credits, as described above) still have to be completed on a mandatory basis.

At the time of admission, the Bachelor's degree must then in any case be available and any alternative or additional courses and examinations to the extent of a maximum of 30 ECTS credits must be prescribed.

As part of the registration process, you must provide evidence of the qualitative admission requirements. You will be asked to upload documents. Please note that

  • you select the correct "type of document"
  • you always create and upload ONE PDF file with all pages of the original document and also, if necessary, including the necessary translations
  • If you need to upload a file again, please have all parts in ONE PDF file again.

Documents that are not issued in German or English must also be submitted in the form of a translation by a sworn translator.

Case 1: You have a degree from or are studying one of the following studies: bachelor studies in architecture, civil engineering, mechanical engineering and the bachelor studies in computer science at TU Wien.

With the degree it is sufficient to upload the Certificate of Study Completion (degree certificate), otherwise you need

  • Confirmation on expected sytudy completion (from the educational institution)
  • Transcript of records (all exams taken and their grades)

Case 2: You have a degree from or are studying another subject-related study program:

  • The Certificate of Study Completion (degree certificate) or Confirmation on expected study completion (from the educational institution)
  • Curriculum (legally binding description of the study program by the educational institution)
  • Course descriptions
  • Transcript of records (all exams taken and their grades)

All documents must include the complete original. Note the necessary translations.

During the registration process, the content of the documents is checked against the above requirements. This check usually takes several days. Please note that you may be asked to submit additional documents. In any case, only documents that have been submitted by the end of the registration period can be used for the check. Therefore, if you submit your proof late, it may not be possible to submit additional documents, as the deadline will expire before then.

If it is not possible to achieve professional equivalence even by compensating for significant professional differences by means of alternative or additional courses and examinations amounting to a maximum of 30 ECTS credits, you will be excluded from the procedure, as subsequent admission to the degree program is not possible from the outset.

If you do not have a degree at the time of registration, you must submit the required documents in the original or a notarized copy at the latest for admission to the program, taking into account the applicable certification regulations. An exact formal verification of the documents and a presentation of the actual degree must be provided by the end of the general admission period of the winter semester or summer semester following the admission procedure at the latest. Otherwise, admission to the study program is not possible.

Letter of motivation (stage 2)

The letter of motivation is a text written by you independently and in your own words, in which you explain the reasons for choosing your studies at the TU Vienna and describe what expectations you have of the studies. It must be written in English. It is a prerequisite for successful registration.

Content of the letter of motivation: The letter of motivation should state why you have chosen this Master's program and what special interests and skills you bring to it. The purpose of the motivation letter is to check how much the applicant has dealt with the special contents of the Master's program "Building Science and Environment", how well he/she can relate his/her own skills and knowledge to it and what expectations and goals are being pursued. Projects or architectural design tasks related to the content of the respective degree program, such as building physics, programming, modeling, contrutive aspects, etc. can be submitted. In any case, the work samples must include a text describing the respective sample. In addition, graphic elements (e.g. drawing, diagram, photo, etc.) must be included in the work samples.

It must not have any protection or encryption. This means editing and printing of the PDF must be fully possible.

It is checked whether the work samples actually meet the specifications. Work samples that do not meet these will result in exclusion from the admission process.

The work sample is then evaluated during the ranking process according to the following criteria.

  • The relevance between the work samples and the contents of the Master's program "Building Science and Environment".
  • Clarity of the argument of the formulation;
  • Clarity and quality of the graphic presentation.

Curriculum vitae (stage 4)

To further determine the professional and personal suitability, a curriculum vitae is required from each applicant. It must be written in English. It is a prerequisite for successful registration.

Content of the curriculum vitae: The curriculum vitae must be written in English. In addition to the relevant academic achievements to date, the curriculum vitae should include a description of relevant work experience relevant to the subject.

  • The connection between personal curriculum vitae and the contents of the study program can be presented in a comprehensible and well-structured manner;
  • Special willingness to perform; proven e.g. by study-specific activities outside of the completed or pursued studies (internships, scientific activities);

Ranking process

The selection committee receives the results from the stages of the procedure. Therefore, previous education, letter of motivation, work samples and curriculum vitae are part of the procedure. The ranking of the applicants is done by the selection committee on the basis of the published evaluation and point system. The number of points achieved in the admission procedure leads to a ranking.  If there is a tie in the number of points awarded to applicants, the applicant with the highest number of points in the third stage (work samples) will be awarded a place. The result of the ranking will be announced to the applicants.

The first 35 applicants will be granted a study place and can be admitted to the program if all other requirements are met.

Levels 2-4 are weighted as follow.

Letter of Motivation 25%
Work samples 40%
Curriculum vitae 35%

This results in the following table for the basic point distribution.

poor

medium

excellent

Letter of Motivation

0

5

10

Work samples

0

8 16

Curriculum vitae

7 14

This results in a score between 0 and 40 points, which is used for automation-based ranking.

It is not possible to waive a place on the course. Therefore, it is not possible to move up.
