Calls for new Doctoral Colleges at TUW
The DOC Center supports the structured doctoral education at TU Wien. In this context, TU Wien ensures the implementation of multidisciplinary, structured doctoral colleges based on the curricula for doctoral studies in engineering sciences, natural sciences, and social and economic sciences.
To promote the development of excellent early-career researchers, TU Wien announces once per year a structured Doctoral College (DK) with a duration of four years. Three years are funded by the Rectorate, while the funding of the fourth year is arranged in coordination between the deans and the TUW-DK Faculty, using faculty funds and/or third-party resources.
The selection is based on the following criteria:
- Scientific excellence: Connection to cutting-edge research, clear objectives, and positioning.
- Interdisciplinary added value: Advantages over individual supervision through intensive, cross-disciplinary training, ethics and integrity education, teamwork, and national and international networking.
- Quality of planning: Clear research structure, qualified faculty, defined qualification profile of graduates, transferable skills training, and dissertation completion criteria.
- Strategic alignment: Contribution to TU Wien’s overarching research priorities.
The final decision is made by the Rectorate.

The fourth year is financed in coordination between the Deans and the TUW-DK Faculty by funds from the faculty and/or third-party funds.
The doctoral college also fosters collaboration with our strategic partner, Imperial College London, in the thematic areas of the call. Accordingly, the submitted proposals should include plans for collaboration with the respective institutes at Imperial, supported by Letters of Intent.
