EMCD - Energy-loss Magnetic Chiral Dichroism

Energy-loss Magnetic Chiral Dichroism (EMCD) was first proven for electrons in 2003 theoretically (C. Hebert und P. Schattschneider, Ultramicroscopy 96 (2003), pp. 463-468, opens an external URL in a new window). Prior it was accessible only for X-ray spectroscopy. The experimental proof succeeded 3 years later and found a big echo within the EELS-community. Since then the spatial resolution of EMCD was improved by the team of USTEM from more than 200 nm to less than 2 nm. It is now possible to study the magnetic behaviour of interfacial atoms in magnetic multilayers.
