The mobility sector is one of the largest contributors to energy-related CO₂ emissions worldwide - in Austria, its share is even higher than the international average at around 28 per cent. Road transport in particular, especially car traffic, contributes significantly to climate pollution. In order to achieve the climate targets by 2040, a far-reaching change towards a climate-friendly and circular mobility industry is required.

The MIND-CET study (‘MobilitätsINDustrien - Circular Economy Transformation’) was conducted on behalf of the FFG and BMK and analyses which transformation steps mobility industries need to take in order to make a significant contribution to Austria's circular economy strategy. The focus is on specific areas of application, recommended measures and strategic steps for implementing a circular mobility system.

The methodological approach follows a combined top-down-bottom-up approach: In the top-down process, strategic objectives and needs for action from existing RTI strategies, master plans, legal framework conditions and funding programmes were analysed. This ensures that the recommendations are in line with national innovation and sustainability policy. At the same time, practical perspectives were gathered in a bottom-up process - by involving companies, industry representatives and other players in the mobility industry and its value chains. This connection enables a realistic picture of the challenges and potentials in the transformation to a circular economy.

The structured interaction between the two levels enabled the development of a practice-orientated RTI roadmap that identifies short, medium and long-term measures along key transformation paths. The aim is to strategically anchor the circular economy in the mobility and supplier industries, secure Austria as a centre of innovation in the long term and support companies on their path to climate neutrality.
