The ever increasing stress on water resources requires a holistic approach to studying the ground and surface waters in catchments that accounts for all human interventions and their impacts. We are international leaders in our basic research on analysing flood processes, the effects of climate change, the transport of groundwater contaminants. Our applied research contributes to the more efficient management of water resources by developing methods for flood forecasting and optimisation of groundwater resources. Our research adopts an interdisciplinary approach creating collaborations between engineering, natural sciences and social sciences. The projects are funded by the European Union (Horizon 2020), ERC, FWF, FFG, ÖAW, public authorities, and national and international commercial partners.
