New construction methods with a high degree of prefabrication, increasing acoustic requirements, and the long-term goal of a circular economy in the construction industry necessitate a rethink in terms of constructions and processes. The industry's demand for "dry" alternatives in floor structures prompted the Bau.Energie.Umwelt Cluster Niederösterreich to address this need.

More than a year of preparation, numerous workshops, and discussions with companies have led to the FFG industry project "Schall.Holz.Bau III" with 16 industry partners and 4 scientific partners.

"Schall.Holz.Bau III" aims to establish foundations for the development of sound-optimized ceiling systems suitable for cost- and time-efficient implementation in industrial construction.

Within the consortium, innovative approaches are being developed and:

  • Investigated in terms of meeting future requirements for ceiling systems (influence parameters, interactions, etc.).
  • Evaluated for their potential applications in industrial construction.
  • The acoustic considerations of these solution approaches are being conducted simultaneously with an efficient, economical, and circular process evaluation for the production and installation of these ceiling systems.

Additionally, predictive models for the acoustic performance of the proposed solution approaches in the ceiling component are being developed:

  • These models are intended to enable the prediction of the acoustic performance of the ceiling system.
  • They consider various ceiling structures and changing parameters.

The industry benefits from the insights and predictive models developed in the project. These enable them to subsequently develop floor systems as a product within their construction systems or optimize existing products.

The collaborative approach in project implementation harnesses the experience and expertise of all partners, thereby simplifying the achievement of project goals. Moreover, effort and risk are minimized for all partners, and knowledge exchange is facilitated across company boundaries.

These benefits of cooperation were already evident at the start of the project on January 25th and 26th, 2021. With the help of various digital tools, 26 participants brought forth initial ideas and open questions on the screen. The work done has now laid the foundation for the further progression of the project.

The motivation of the partners is high: the new solution approaches are intended to be disruptive and out-of-the-box. Functional layers, alternative construction processes, and prefabrication are the focus. "Who orders a car and has it assembled in their parking lot?" says one project participant.

When the moderator asked the project partners when the project would be considered a success for them, an entrepreneur responded, "We have already achieved the main success: different partners with various areas of expertise have come together for a common goal." This is a wonderful confirmation of cluster work!
