Multilocality affects large sections of the population. Decisive motives are primarily education, work, leisure, relationships or a combination of these. Multilocal lifestyles have different effects in and on rural areas. They can present both challenges and opportunities and reinforce existing trends. In order to prevent or counteract negative effects and utilise potential, multilocality should be considered in a differentiated manner in planning practice, particularly in regional planning and development.

Project Results

This study builds on the current state of the discourse in spatial sciences and planning practice. It is supplemented by a comparative approach with four study areas representing selected rural areas in Austria. In addition, a broader spectrum of multi-local lifestyles is included and the associated need for action for different areas of spatial planning is visualised.

Concrete options for action were developed in the five fields of action of housing, mobility, infrastructure, work and participation. These form the core result of the study and are explained in the first part of the report. The second part contains two supplementary in-depth studies.
