Helena Linzer studied spatial and regional planning. She joined the Research Unit of Local Planning in 1986 after several years working as a freelancer for civil engineering practices, research and higher education institutions, primarily in the fields of spatial planning, energy and the environment.

Her research and teaching activities focus on municipal development and land-use planning, village renewal, rural development planning and participatory planning processes. The latter was also the subject of her PhD thesis, completed in 1999.

In October 2022, Helena Linzer retired as a faculty member of IFOER. Yet, she continues to support its teaching activities and graduate students on occasion.
