Michael Mehaffy (USA) - Place Networks: Towards a consilience of urban spatial theories

Vortrag

Over fifty years after the influential urbanist Jane Jacobs labeled planning a "pseudo-science," much work has been done in network science and other fields
outlining a "science of cities." But to what degree has this work translated into practice, in the way that, say, theories of medicine or physics (e.g. germ theory, particle theory) translated into useful practice in those fields? Michael Mehaffy argues that much work remains, but an outline of a "consilient" approach can now be seen.

Michael Mehaffy is a philosopher of design and urbanism as well as a practicing urban designer with visiting appointments at five graduate institutions in four countries.
As Sir David Strathclyde fellow at the University of Strathclyde he published work on spatial networks of walkable cities with Sergio Porta, Nikos Saligaros and Yodan Rofe'. He is currently a member of the Faculty of Architecture at Delft University of Technology, where his work focuses on urban form and greenhouse gas emissions.
