Fresh off the press, the outcomes of our investigation into the sources of PFAS in municipal wastewater within the FATERISK Aqua project, funded by Wiener Wissenschafts-, Forschungs- und Technologiefonds (WWTF).
Some key messages:

  • Consumer products account for a dominant share of emissions for PFCAs, but not for PFSAs
  • The contribution of groundwater infiltration and surface runoff is greater than we hypothesised at the start of the study
  • The available information on legacy stocks, release and transformation processes is currently insufficient to explain the total observed loads for specific PFAS, particularly for PFOS, in urban municipal wastewater.
