There is a multitude of skilled professions which you can learn at TU Wien. We currently offer training in ten different skilled professions. We are firm believers in encouraging girls to get involved in careers where women are still very much under-represented at present. We are thrilled that the trend is reversing and that more and more young women are being trained to become chemical lab technicians, machine production technicians and much more.

Trainees who have completed the year or their training extremely successfully are honoured on a yearly basis, which is testament to the high level of training they receive and proves that we are meeting the demand for increased quality in training.

Nowadays, computers with standard and industry-specific software are used for day-to-day work in virtually every company. This software needs to be constantly adapted to new requirements. This is a job for application developers who specialise in coding. They devise software applications, develop programs and browser applications, and program applications. What’s more, they also secure and manage data, document processes, and advise and train users.

  • Calibrating applications with the customers
  • Programming applications or parts of applications
  • Advising customers
  • Drawing up project plans, schedules and resource plans, and coordinating with the customers
  • Determining and analysing data; choosing and implementing data models and data management systems

Archiv-, Bibliotheks- und Informationsassistent_innen arbeiten in Bibliotheken, Archiven und sonstigen Einrichtungen, die Informationsmedien systematisch sammeln, aufbereiten und zur Verfügung stellen. Der Lehrberuf "Archiv-, Bibliotheks- und Informationsassistent_in" ist ein kaufmännischer Büroberuf, weshalb in der Ausbildung auch zahlreiche kaufmännische Inhalte vermittelt werden. Das sind vor allem die Bereiche "Verwaltung, Organisation, Kommunikation und EDV", "Beschaffung und Angebot (Arbeitsmittel, Material, Waren und Dienstleistungen)" sowie "Betriebliches Rechnungswesen".

Training duration: 3 years

Archive, library and information assistants work in libraries, archives and other establishments that systemically collect, prepare and provide information media. This role is a commercial office-based career, which is why the training covers a great deal of business-related content. This includes areas such as: management, organisation, communication and IT; procurement and supply (work equipment, materials, goods and services); business accounting.

Key training content:

  • Procuring media, information and data and recording this in a file program
  • Researching certain information in databases, data networks or on the Internet
  • Organising, archiving and maintaining inventories and creating registries
  • Maintaining inventories and checking the completeness of the inventories
  • Administrative work (e.g. managing customer files, dealing with borrowing processes, processing all formalities in conjunction with the purchase of new media or subscriptions to magazines/journals, bookkeeping, accounting etc.) carried out with the help of operational information and communication systems (primarily electronic data processing systems)
  • Creating, maintaining and evaluating statistics and files on an ongoing basis

Training duration: 3 years

The office is the heart of a company and the administrators ensure that everything runs seamlessly. They are responsible for making sure that the key facts and figures are always accessible (e.g. statistics, sales figures), that enquiries are always forwarded to the right person and that telephone calls and emails are dealt with. They also monitor deadlines, make calculations, manage cash and process payments.

Training duration: 3.5–4 years

Electronics engineers specialising in applied electronics work on a multitude of different products, ranging from electronic components and computers right through to all kinds of electronic systems. The most significant of these include control units for production machines, signalling equipment, electronic measurement and testing equipment and electronic medical equipment (e.g. blood pressure monitors). Electronics engineers specialising in applied electronics install individual parts and carry out all preliminary work for commissioning. They are also responsible for repairs and maintenance (servicing).

  • Manufacturing, checking and repairing electronic components, parts and assemblies for devices, machines and systems
  • Manufacturing printed circuit boards; assembling, wiring, checking and repairing measurement equipment, control systems, regulation equipment and signalling equipment

Training duration: 3.5 years

A lot of work goes into professional photography. Without photographers, newspapers would just be words and catalogues would not have any images. They know exactly which lighting conditions and camera are required to show the subject in question (anything from people and animals right through to landscapes) at its best. On top of this, they record video footage, enlarge images and edit them with the help of modern software (e.g. they can make photo montages).

Training duration: 4 years

IT technicians specialising in industrial engineering deal with all aspects of the IT infrastructure, from networks and environments for production applications right through to the terminal equipment (production machines). They configure the equipment with the relevant applications, plan and create networks, server systems, cloud solutions, data storage and backup systems, and draw up authorisation concepts. They create technical concepts and solutions, and also manage and create databases and interfaces for production applications. They carry out regular tests on the IT infrastructure, document the technical processes, maintain and upgrade the systems and rectify weak points and errors.

IT technicians specialising in systems engineering supply their customers with IT equipment such as computers, monitors, mobile devices (tablets, laptops), projectors, printers etc., as well as the relevant software. They also ensure that all of these work seamlessly. In addition, they design and plan networks, server systems, data storage systems and backup systems, and draw up authorisation concepts. They provide the necessary hardware and software and configure the equipment for users and the network. IT technicians specialising in systems engineering have a great deal of contact with their customers, advise on different implementation options and carry out repairs, maintenance and upgrades. They take data security and data protection into account, document all technical processes, carry out tests and draw up operating manuals.

Machine production technicians manufacture machines, equipment and devices (e.g. machine tools and office machines). They create production programmes for computerised (CNC) machines, produce the individual parts, assemble them and commission the machines and systems on-site. They are incorporated into the industrial production process to manufacture custom-made products and parts or by means of supply contracts. They machine metal and operate computerised systems and equipment.

  • Installing, checking and adjusting mechanical components and automatic equipment
  • Assembling, commissioning and repairing machines and equipment

Training duration: 3.5–4 years

The drive system of an aeroplane is just one of the countless machines and systems made up of mechanical (‘mecha’) and electronic (‘tronic’) components. Mechatronic engineers produce these systems and install them in the right place. They install the electrical components, weld the materials together and program the systems. They also carry out any necessary repairs.

  • Setting up and checking electrical, pneumatic (operated with air pressure) and hydraulic (operated with fluid pressure) controls
  • Programming, installing and repairing mechatronic systems

Training duration: 3 years

Before a motor is produced, a machine is assembled or new plastic products go into mass production, model builders make a smaller, accurate scale model of the item from metal, wood or plastic. This means that their customers or colleagues can imagine what their product will look like and decide whether it is suitable for the future user.

Model builders work together in a team with vocational colleagues and other specialists and assistants in companies in the metal-processing industry.

  • Making models in line with workpiece drawings
  • Creating models made of wood, plastic or metal, which are used as a template for manufacturing individual or custom products (e.g. machine components)
  • Machining raw materials with highly modern, computerised machining methods (CNC machines)
  • Machining workpieces with tools such as drills, planers, milling machines, grinding machines and polishing machines

Training duration: 3.5 years

A physics laboratory technician is a physicist’s or a physical engineer’s right-hand man or woman. In research and development laboratories in universities, companies and testing institutes, they prepare physical tests and measurements, carry them out together with the specialists and analyse the results. They measure the temperature, weight and other physical variables. They document the results using computer programs and also clean and repair the equipment used in the process.
