Today, Liposomes, vesicles made of lipid esters, are well-known important carriers for the administration of different cargo (drugs, vaccines, genes, proteins, small molecules, antibiotics and nutrients). Archaeosomes, made of lipid ethers, represent a special class of such liposomes originating from membrane lipids of Archaea. Currently, they are receiving increased attention as they have proven to be highly stable against heat, pH, bile salts, lipases and oxidation, making them more attractive than conventional liposomes for biopharmaceutical applications. Tailor-made archaeal lipids with reduced heterogeneity and defined properties can be produced in a cost effective way and at high quantities allowing their use e.g. as drug vesicles in medicine and will replace currently used liposomes.
