Ready for new discoveries

New postgraduate part-time master's program on NanoBiosciences and NanoMedicine commences in January 2013

New procedures for tumor treatment, techniques for targeted release of medicaments in the body or methods for replacing tissues and organs – these are only a few examples for the application of Nanotechnology in medical science. A new postgraduate master’s program for NanoBiosciences and NanoMedicine provides sound knowledge in this field. This course has been developed by Danube University Krems in cooperation with the Vienna University of Technology and the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna. The course commences in January 2013.

The three Universities are contributing jointly with their expertise for the part-time post-graduate Master of Engineering (MEng) program "NanoBiosciences & NanoMedicine", in order to provide an interdisciplinary and practical education covering the latest state of the art knowledge. The postgraduate university program is also meant to serve as preparation for job application to companies that are engaged with issues pertaining to Nanotechnology in the field of biology and medicine.

“Nanotechnology has developed into an enabling technology for many fields of science. Especially in biotechnology and medicine, the approach through nanoscience is the principal means of making new discoveries and employing techniques of advanced analysis. Knowledge of the state of the art of nanotechnology techniques with special emphasis on biology and medicine will enable the students to keep pace with the most recent discoveries as well as apply the latest innovations in their daily routine“, so Univ.-Prof. Dr. Erich Gornik, Academic Director, Vienna University of Technology.

Contents and Target Groups

Apart from providing basic knowledge in the fields of biophysics, biochemistry, genetics, microbiology and molecular biology, the topics of tumor therapy, "Tissue engineering", "Drug delivery", biocompatibility of materials and nanoanalytic methods in diagnostics are also covered. The risks of nanotechnology are also discussed and reflected upon critically.

The four-semester University course is structured in modules. It is primarily meant for the teaching faculty, researchers, decision-makers, sales managers and natural scientists, medicine-related and engineering-related disciplines. To ensure optimum integration between the course of study and participants’ professional obligations, the teaching units are arranged in blocks that take place in Vienna or Krems. The lectures are conducted exclusively in English. The final degree "Master of Engineering (MEng) in NanoBiosciences & NanoMedicine" is awarded by Danube University Krems in cooperation with the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna, and the Vienna University of Technology. Applications are being accepted with immediate effect.
