"The University Council of TU Wien has unanimously elected Professor Jens Schneider from the Technical University of Darmstadt out of three excellent candidates as the new Rector of TU Wien," announced University Council Chairperson Peter Oswald after the body's meeting on 1 July 2022. The four-year term of office of the new Rector will begin on 1 October 2023.

About Jens Schneider

The 52-year-old civil engineer provides with diverse and international experience in terms of management and leadership. Glad about his election, the newly elected Rector Jens Schneider explains: "TU Wien is an excellent, internationally renowned scientific institution with a history of more than 200 years. I am delighted that I can contribute to shape the future of this outstanding university together with the members of TU Wien. Creativity, a passion for science and technology, and a culture of scientific discourse with civil society as well as the worlds of business, culture and politics are the prerequisites for sustainably meeting global challenges. Jens Schneider will be building on the excellent and pioneering work of Sabine Seidler, who has been Rector of TU Wien since 2011. Current Rector Sabine Seidler believes the future is in safe hands: "I am delighted that TU Wien has been able to appoint such a high-caliber candidate in Jens Schneider and I congratulate him on his success. His strong concept will ensure the continued positive development of TU Wien for the benefit of its staff, students and alumni. I look forward to working together closely with Jens Schneider over the coming year on an orderly transition and giving him a thorough introduction to TU Wien."

Election process

In May, the selection committee invited five candidates to public hearings at the university. Subsequently, the selection committee, with the involvement of the Working Group on Equal Opportunities, submitted its three-member proposal to the Senate. The latter in turn forwarded a proposal of three candidates to the University Council, which then made its decision. The University Council thanks all candidates for their highly qualified applications and all those involved in the election process.
